Porcelain Slab Fabrication

Porcelain is the most demanding material in our shop, and the reason not every fabricator will quote it. It is harder and more brittle than quartz, so it is cut wet with continuous-rim diamond tooling at slower feed rates — rush the pass and the edge chips. The slabs are large and thin, which means vacuum lifters and rigid transport frames: a porcelain slab allowed to flex cracks, and it does not crack politely.

Mitered edges. Because the slab is thin, a thick edge is built rather than cut. Two pieces are mitered at 45 degrees and bonded so the seam disappears and the veining turns the corner. That is how the two-inch edges on our Woodinville kitchen were made.

Waterfall panels. The same miter, turned down at the end of an island, with the vein matched across the joint so the stone reads as one piece falling to the floor. It only works if the panel is chosen and laid out before anything is cut.

Full-height backsplashes. The slab runs up the wall to the hood or the cabinets, wrapping window returns and sills. No grout line, nothing to scrub, and the veining continues off the counter instead of stopping at it. On a Snohomish kitchen we book-matched two panels so the veining meets in a mirrored seam behind the range.

Layout before cutting. We lay the slab out digitally and decide where the cuts fall, so veining carries across joints and matches where panels meet. A Tacoma kitchen got a full-height backsplash running wall to wall without a seam that way — the cabinets came off the wall so the slabs could go in whole.

Cutouts. Undermount and apron sinks, cooktops and flush-set pot fillers are where porcelain punishes a shop that treats it like quartz: corners want a radius, openings want reinforcement, and the cutting belongs on the bench, not on site.

If you have been told a porcelain countertop is impractical, it usually means the shop is not tooled for it. Bring the plans — we fabricate porcelain, Dekton and Neolith as routine work.

I've attached before & after photos of the space. What set them apart from the other contractors we contacted was that they showed us the end product first - remnants from their yard and tile/cabinet samples before we needed to pay a deposit. This allowed us to visualize all the components together and have confidence on the outcome when paying the deposit. We gave them a tight deadline and they (impressively) delivered on this deadline. Nobody had what I needed in any state, nor could they get it in time.  Dustin was able to get it to the store the next day with no added cost.  My son just happened to be on vacation in the area.
